You know those days when you feel like you just can’t focus on the tasks you have to accomplish? Your brain feels like it is in a fog – like it is firing in slow motion.
If you are like me, you probably wonder why you feel this way. You eat right and exercise. You consider yourself to be pretty healthy. You torture yourself thinking that if you could just clear your head and get your mind working more efficiently, you could accomplish so much more! You could be a better athlete, better at work, better at… everything! You probably aren’t sleeping so well, either.
The truth is that people have been feeling this way for years, and sometimes we need a little help to get the neurons in our brains firing better. I am not talking about pharmaceutical drugs that can have negative side effects.
I am talking about supplements called Nootropics. In order for a supplement to qualify as a Nootropic, it must be neuroprotective (protect neurons from injury or degeneration), and be extremely low on the human toxicity scale. Sounds great so far, right?
So, What The Heck Are Nootropics?
Nootropic is the name given to any substance that can improve brain function without negatively affecting it. In the 1960’s, the first Nootropic, Piracetam, was used to help people with motion sickness. In 1971, Piracetam was tested and found to be successful with memory enhancement!
What are the benefits?
Nootropics are known to enhance cognitive abilities such as:
- memory formation and recall
- learning & logical reasoning
- creative thinking
- motivation & mental energy
Types of Nootropics
Today, there are basically seven types of Nootropics: Cholinergics, Racetams, Dopaminergics, Serotonergics, Adaptogens, Metabolics, and Stimulants. (The last type can only be taken occasionally – we want to increase brain function, not tire it out!)
Each type of Nootropic enhances the brain in its own way. The best Nootropics are generally most effective when “stacked” together. Certain combinations of supplements can have more positive effects on the brain than others depending on what your desired outcome is.
What Are The Top Nootropics?
Nootropics have evolved considerably over the last 40 years, and today’s Nootropics are even better than they were a few years ago. As I mentioned earlier, different types of Nootropics are used for different outcomes. Here are the four most popular Nootropics:
One of the first Racetams invented, it is used medically in other countries, but is not approved for such use in the US and is considered a Nootropic. Studies have reported an increase memory and focus, increase learning, and an increase in sensory perception with the use of Piracetam.
Side effects include nausea, headache, fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, and depression, however, reports of these are more common in high dosages or in people who are sensitive to drugs.
It has been reported that Piracetam is more effective when “stacked” with Choline based Nootropics, like Alpha GPC. This means that you have to take multiple supplements for maximum results.
Quoted as being “1000 times stronger than Piracetam”, Noopept gets metabolized much more efficiently than the Racetam family of Nootropics.
The good news is that a much lower dose is needed to get results. The bad news is that you must be very careful with the dosage. An overdose of this Nootropic is much more common, and can have side effects.
Benefits include overall increased cognitive ability, increased learning ability, enhanced memory, improved reflexes, advanced logical thinking, and improved mood.
Side effects include a headache, gastrointestinal issues, nausea, and fatigue which are reported at higher doses. Since is it easy to overdose, side effects are more likely.
It is important to consult a doctor before taking Noopept if you are taking any other medications or supplements.
Stacking with Alpha GPC is common, and can reduce side effects.
#2 Alpha GPC
It is no surprise that Alpha GPC is one of the best Nootropics. It is commonly stacked with other Nootropics to reduce side effects and increase results, and recent studies have shown that it has several benefits.
Taking Alpha GPC before a workout can boost hGH levels (human growth hormone) by up to 200%, as well as increase cognitive ability and improve coordination and strength.
Alpha GPC has been reported beneficial in the treatment of stroke patients and is being studied as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. It has been proven to increase overall brain function, improve mood, and even repair brain injury.
Side effects are minimal and only occur with high dosages.
#1 Alpha Brain
Alpha Brain is my overall favorite Nootropic. As I said earlier, most people stack their Nootropics for maximum results. Alpha Brain takes care of creating the most effective stack for you!
I have yet to see a really negative Alpha Brain review!
This all inclusive “smart drug” is a natural mix of 11 Nootropic supplements, including the amazing Alpha GPC. It is a great supplement for people who are new to Nootropics and is great for those Nootropic veterans because it contains some of the best supplements.
Benefits include razor focus, enhanced memory, mental clarity, improved reaction time, increased motivation and drive, improved mood, better sleep, and many have reported lucid dreaming as well!
Overall, Alpha Brain covers all the bases that anyone would desire in a Nootropic.
